Overnight ratings for Olympic Opening Ceremony were brutal: “tape delay” or “just don’t care?”

August 6, 2016

NBC averaged a 16.5 overnight rating from 8-11:30 PM. Reasonable people can argue over the cause (tape delay, don’t care, streaming, Trump vs Hillary, Netflix, etc) but there’s no arguing the numbers are way down from 2012 (London) and other recent opening nights and that NBC PR and executives are having a rough morning. I’m team “just don’t care.” NBC says there was 42,000,000 minutes of streaming but that works…

Belmont Stakes historical TV viewership 2000-2015

June 11, 2016

The Belmont Stakes is upon us. After the last two-years of having a triple crown contender for the Belmont, there isn’t one this year. As you can see from other recent non-contender years (2009-2013) viewership-wise that makes all the difference in the world. Belmont Stakes viewership 2000-2015: if you’re on a mobile phone, this will be easier to read if you tilt it into landscape mode Year Net Viewers (Millions) Triple Crown…

The Preakness Stakes draws a 6.2 overnight rating, up 7% from 2015

May 22, 2016

Exaggerator won at The Preakness which drew a 6.2/14 overnight rating/share on Saturday. That’s up 6.9% from last year’s 5.8 overnight but still a smidge off the 6.3 overnight rating the race drew in 2014. While that’s good news for NBC, Exaggerator’s win is a mixed-bag for the network. With no shot at a Triple Crown this year the ratings for the Belmont Stakes will fall far short of last year’s numbers. Per NBC Sports the Preakness peaked with 8.0/18 household…

Historical viewership for the Preakness Stakes 1993-2016 (Updated)

May 20, 2016

The Preakness always takes a backseat to the Kentucky Derby ratings-wise. In 2015 when the Kentucky Derby averaged 16 million viewers, the Preakness averaged 8.9 million. Still, nearly 9 million viewers isn’t shabby and the Preakness winner determines the fate of ratings for the Belmont Stakes. If Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist wins the Preakness there will be much more interest in the Belmont. Update: Exaggerator’s 2016 win averaged 9.4 million viewers. Viewership for the Preakness Stakes 1993-2015: Year…

The Kentucky Derby still draws a crowd (TV Viewership 1989-2015)

May 6, 2016

After decades on ABC, the Kentucky Derby moved to NBC in 2001 where it has been since and NBC reversed a decades long downward viewership trend on ABC. NBC did that in part by measuring the telecast window a bit differently than ABC had, but it’s important to note the NBC numbers below are *not* merely the actual race which runs a bit over two minutes. Last year’s average viewership of 16 million, for…

Overnight ratings battle: Rodgers, Patriots-Colts easily top Cubs-Mets NLCS

October 19, 2015

In what should surprise no one, anywhere, NBC’s Sunday Night Football matchup of the New England Patriots vs Indianapolis Colts easily beat TBS’s NLCS game 2 between the Chicago Cubs and New York Mets in the battle of overnight ratings. The NFL contest garnered 14.6% of the households in the top 56 markets compared to only 4.8% for the game on TBS. But it was CBS’s late afternoon Window that ruled…

More record ratings for the NFL with Broncos-Chiefs Thursday Night Football (Updated)

September 18, 2015

After setting “Kickoff Week” records last week, the NFL is off to a good start in week 2 with the CBS/NFL Network Thursday night football match combining for a record 14.3/25 overnight household rating/share for the Denver Broncos late win over the Kansas City Chiefs. That bettered the previous record for the CBS/NFL Network combo by 4% that was set with last year’s Steelers/Ravens opener (13.7/23 on September 11, 2014). The…
