Sure, it’s old news by now that the Sugar Bowl college football playoff between Ohio State and Alabama was the most-watched program on the cable sports networks with 28.271 million and that the Rose Bowl between Florida State and Oregon was right behind it averaging 28.164 million. Rose Bowl & Sugar Bowl each watched by more than last year’s BCS Championship Game

Oregon and Ohio State weren’t the only winners in the new College Football Playoff system. ESPN claims they were the two largest audiences in cable TV history. We posted the overnight household ratings earlier, but now the viewership numbers are in for the Rose Bowl and the Sugar Bowl, the first-ever playoff seminfinals. Rose Bowl & Sugar Bowl = Highest Overnight Ratings Ever for non championship on ESPN/ABC

update: viewership numbers are here (and spectacular). Playoffs!? The ratings are in for the first ever College Football Playoff semifinals and not surprisingly they were quite good. It makes comparisons to prior years’ Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl numbers a bit apples-to-pears, but ESPN isn’t complaining.
