Mailbag: What about Gunsmoke?

June 15, 2017

I know you’re not posting daily ratings anymore, but any update on how the sports debate shows are doing versus Gunsmoke? Kristin Ann Arbor, Mi I never tracked that religiously and I have a bad memory. And this is a small sample size (“last week”) but to me it looks like the gap is closing. Is Gunsmoke finally starting to lose steam after 60+ years? Or has cable news…

On SC6 and giving Jamie Horowitz due credit

May 13, 2017

Why? Picture an editorial cartoon. It’d be a bunch of wine barrels representing different issues ailing ESPN’s SportsCenter franchise. Some of the barrels are in decent shape, SC6 is one of the barrels that actually is in decent shape ratings-wise. But oh man, there’s wine literally gushing out of some of the other barrels! In the cartoon dozens of inspectors are inspecting the SC6 barrel. Nobody is paying any attention to any of the…

The Empire Strikes Back: ESPN responds to rebel FS1

January 24, 2017

Mike Soltys, vice president in ESPN’s PR corporate communications has an amusing rebuttal to some of the ratings jabs thrown by FS1 titled: Fox v. ESPN: Anatomy of a moving target. Mike writes a lot better than I do so I’m not going to summarize his bullet points. He makes the compelling and accurate smackdown-ish case that ESPN’s ratings are in much better shape than FS1’s. That’s undeniable and makes for…

First Take vs Undisputed/First Take move to ESPN Ratings Update

January 24, 2017

I wrote about First Take’s move to ESPN earlier this month after a few days of data were in and gave the move a C- grade. 10+ days of additional data haven’t change the landscape.  Through Friday January 20: First Take on ESPN is up 18% versus the same period last year when it was on ESPN2 First Take has improved its margin of victory relative to ESPN The 10-Noon SportsCenters…

Midnight SportsCenter with Scott Van Pelt viewership is up 6% year over year (Updated)

December 9, 2016

Per Andy Hall at ESPN PR, viewership for the midnight Monday-Friday “SportsCenter” with Scott Van Pelt is up year over year from 642,000 to 683,000. While the show’s viewership is very lead-in dependent it was lead-in dependent last year too! Considering “Monday Night Football” is down double digits year over year it seems pretty impressive. Update: while I love SVP and am in the tank for him, I got some clarification…

Changing channels & changing habits is hard to do

November 2, 2016

File this under “stating the obvious” but… Over the past week I’ve been observing how difficult it is for Fox to get people to switch over to FS1 for the rest of the World Series post game coverage. Here’s FS1’s World Series post game viewership for the first 5 games: Game 1: 111K Game 2: 186K Game 3: 179K Game 4: (delayed until 2:30AM ET due to college football) Game 5: 269K Especially…

How far have ESPN’s SportsCenter ratings fallen in 2016? 6% overall, 12% at 6PM Mon-Fri (Updated)

May 17, 2016

Per Nielsen data so far in 2016 (through May 16) ESPN’s SportsCenter is averaging 479,000 viewers across all telecasts (all times/days) and through a similar period last year (May 17, 1853 telecasts) SportsCenter averaged 509,000 viewers. The 6pm Monday-Friday SportsCenter telecast (which I bring up only because FS1 is planning to launch a Cowherd-Whitlock 6pm competitor next month) is down 12% vs last year when it averaged 634,000 viewers through…
